HIV PPSA

Description:
Can cell phones be used to fight AIDS? On November 7th, 2007 in Philadelphia, teams from five universities and four AIDS organizations came together to pioneer ways that powerful mobile devices we carry in our pockets, packs and purses can encourage good health decisions. Students, faculty, activists, doctors and health educators collaborated to create a new type of video message to be distributed to cell phones. We call these cell phone videos personal public service announcements (PPSAs) because they promote public good through the most personal of media. The personal public service announcements we produced were to encourage young people to be tested for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. We paired student teams from the University of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, and Temple University with professional video producers. The three student teams were equipped with a mobile video studio that fit into a backpack. And each mobile student team was given Verizon phones, Verizon wireless broadband, and a public transportation pass. Then they were sent out into downtown Philly to shoot. These mobile teams collected audio and video to be sent via Verizon's EVDO network back to their remote producers sequestered in hotel rooms. These teams had seven hours to produce a video message designed to be distributed to cell phones.

It was an ambitious project crazy in scope and crammed full of new uses of wild technology. But at 7P on November 7th, the designated deadline for our teams to turn in their work, we were amazed to see that they had surpassed our most optimistic projections. These three teams produced ten personal public service announcements! Check them out by clicking the links below:
